Requesting Donations for Gurdwara Sahib Darwin
Although it is not known when Sikhs first arrived in Darwin, it is however a fact that, from 1860s, cameleers commonly called 'Ghans' were brought to Australia to help explore and settle Australia's vast arid interior. A sizable minority of the Ghans were Sikhs from Punjab and large majority were Muslims from Afghanistan and its surrounds. Since these times many Sikhs have settled across all States and Territories on the vast land of Australia. The Sikhs form one of the largest subgroups of Indian Australians with 72,000 adherents according to the 2011 census.
Darwin has seen a constant increase of Sikhs either arriving directly from India whilst other have come from other jurisdictions within Australia. With Waheguru’s grace, the Sikh Association NT (Northern Territory) Inc., established in 2009, has grown steadily in numbers and in strength. Our congregation has developed from approximately 21 to 150 and it is estimated there are over 250 families in Darwin. Our programs have expanded from once a month to fortnightly worships in private homes and large halls to our Gurudwara Sahib.
We are indebted to the Singapore Sangat for their kindness in bringing the Guru Granth Sahib, our Guruji to Darwin on 27 January 2013. Sewadar S. Hardev Singh Ji and S. Baljeet Singh Ji took all the care to accompany Guruji on this journey. Guruji’s arrival will always be remembered as a very historic moment for the Darwin Sikhs.
We thank Waheguruji and Sangat for all we have achieved and continuously improve.
